Street dancer leaping for joy
Jenai Mason-Smith came first in the under 14s United Dance Organisation’s British Street Dance competition.
The 12-year-old, from Holloway Road, Witney, also scooped second place in a duo dance with partner Megan Selby, 12, in the contest held in Somerset last weekend.
Jenai, a pupil at Henry Box School, Witney, said: “I am really happy. I love dancing and I want to dance when I’m older.”
Mum Marie Smith, 33, said: “We are very proud of her. She has been dancing since she was six, and has always loved it.”
The dancer was given a trophy and an iPod music player docking station as a prize.
Miss Smith added: “Jenai doesn’t like me to go with her to the competitions, so I waited at home. I thought she would do well, but she is really chuffed.”
In last year’s competition, Jenai was placed second in the under 12s category.
The young dancer trains with Unleashed – a street dance group made up of 19 girls from Cassington, led by teacher Nadia Pharaon, who runs Step 2 Dance Academy in Cassington village hall.
Jenai said: “We practised hard, but it was worth it.”
